A reception to meet the artist will be held on Saturday, March 1st from 6 until 8 p.m. The public is invited. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 until 5, or by appointment.

George Dunbar’s distinguished career has been recognized throughout the years, and most recently by the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Southern Masters Series with a large-scale exhibition, in 2007.

The Exhibition: A painterly and free-form approach is used in George Dunbar’s new Bonfouca Series. Dunbar incorporates his recognizable materials of clay, palladium, moongold, gold leaf, and black oxidized silver, combining the media with a less graphic approach. In this series, this more painterly technique exudes a spontaneity and play. The two primary shapes in his new work, the rectangle and circle, are compositional counterpoints which can be read both visually and rhythmically. Dunbar has beautifully choreographed these two elements to create variations of composition and surface. With delicate layering and overlying broad brushstrokes, the paintings emanate a dynamic interaction of surface, light, and color.

George Dunbar was born in Louisiana, and was educated at Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia, and later in Paris. The artist’s work has been exhibited in the U.S. and abroad. His paintings and sculptures can be found in the New Orleans Museum of Art, The British Museum, as well as the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, and others, in addition to public and private collections throughout the country.
