Press Release
NEW ORLEANS - Heriard-Cimino Gallery presents New Paintings by Mark Davis. The exhibition will be on view from January 5 through February 23, 2008. An opening reception to meet the artist will be held Saturday, January 5th, from 6 to 8 p.m. The public is invited. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 until 5, or by appointment.
In this exhibition Mark Davis has created a new series of vibrant paintings which continue to explore the manifestation of memory through repetition of brush marks and a focus on the infinite and subtle variations encompassed in tones of color. The act of painting for Mark Davis is a meditation on a specific physical event in his life and the emotion that is felt at that time. Davis applies paint in layers, rubbing parts away to reveal previous surfaces and color delineations. A repeated grid-like pattern is visually subtle yet complex in his application. Multiple transparent layers of paint create an atmospheric quality, while under- layers peer through veils of sheer color. Davis’ dynamic paintings emit a radiance that comes through and envelops the viewer in his or her own contemplation.
Mark Davis is a native of Alabama where he received his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Art from the University of South Alabama. Davis was included in the juried exhibition at the Mobile Museum of Art, Best of Mobile, and the University of Mobile in 2000. He was Artist in Resident at the Mobile Museum of Art from October 2001 - 2003. The Mobile Museum of Art featured a solo exhibition of Mark Davis’ past paintings in 2007, with a catalog essay by D. Eric Bookhardt. He recently had a solo exhibition at Springhill College, AL. This is Davis’ third solo exhibition here in New Orleans. |
