Andree Carter Resume

Press Release

NEW ORLEANS---Heriard-Cimino Gallery presents “Urban Cells,” a suite of new paintings by Andrée Carter, in Gallery II. A reception to meet the artist will be held on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 from 6 to 9 p.m. in conjunction with Art for Arts’ Sake celebration. The public is invited. The exhibition will be on view from October 3 - 31, 2009. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 to 5, or by appointment.

Andrée Carter creates gutsy tactile paintings that celebrate the materiality of paint and the powerful element of color. In her most recent series of paintings, she concentrates on a monotone approach with nuances of additional colors showing through. In these visceral pieces, Carter has boldly laid down paint upon an intricately drawn grid. While the grid is no longer visible beneath the multitude of layers, it has been central to her process. In stunning contrast to the formal structure to the grid, she intuitively approaches the canvas with layers upon layers of oil paint, turpentine and textures. The applied paint is sanded away in areas before applying additional layers. The result is a beautifully integrated experience of color and palpable textures.

Andrée Carter is a native of New Orleans, LA, where she received her B.A. in painting from Loyola University, New Orleans, and her M.F.A in painting from the University of New Orleans. Carter has had numerous solo exhibitions in Seattle and New Orleans as well as the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans. She has exhibited her work in group exhibitions in Louisiana, Washington, Oregon, Washington and Tennessee. Her work can be found in public and private collections throughout the country, including the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, LA, the Hotel Max, Seattle, WA, and the Hyatt Hotel, New Orleans, LA. Carter is an instructor at the Art Institute of Seattle, Pratt Fine Arts Center and Kirkland Art Center in Washington. Andrée Carter has lived and worked in Seattle since 2000. This is Carter’s second solo exhibition at Heriard-Cimino Gallery in New Orleans.
